This is the planet Lilithia, set against the backdrop of its home star system, orbiting its sun, Keilthyn. The planet is the setting of a story idea I had a LONG time ago, and never quite got around to actually writing. It's a very warm and temperate world, dotted with small islands and dominated by a large super continent wrapping around its equator. The north pole has a large island/continent covered by glaciers, while the south pole has frozen into a sporadic series of ice sheets and bergs. The vast majority of the continent is covered by dense forest and jungle, and filled with an over-sized ecosystem. The hostility of this system has led the main intelligent life-forms of the planet - the Lilithians, go figure - to split. Small tribes of one faction live apart from the rest of the civilization in constant danger from the surrounding life, while the main faction clusters together in and around a series of 17 large city-states. These units centralize around large city/structures of uncertain origin, protected by large energy shields.
The Lilithian System exists near the center of one of the galactic arms, and as such the surrounding space is nearly devoid of other habitable systems (due to undesirable stresses found closer to the galactic core). However, it also finds itself relatively near to the routes of travel frequented by many star-faring races. Of course, 'near' is a relative term in celestial terminology, and most travelers would have little reason to stray from their course. The planet is for the most part without visitors.

I started getting the idea to do a celestial scene a while back, but had no idea how to go about it. Then my friend had me do some concept art for them <.< Several moderately useful tutorials later, here I am. Critique highly encouraged, since I'd like to get better at this.

i have no idea what an ideal of this might be, never seen anything like it... it is very intriguing and i like the planets description... >.>

Ideal?

perfect?

:iconbrokenseraphim:
I suppose the ideal in this case would be... Something that looks like it really is a picture taken from space, but with a smooth beauty that leaves the watcher breathless and gives a true sense of magnitude and fathomless depths. That would be the idea. No choppiness, no cartoonishness, no fragmentation. Convincing.

*looks at again* hmmm... in that case... maybe if the planet were just a touch smaller, or if the backround were a lot bigger, to give it the more fathomless depth look? the rest is definitly covered.

If that be your goal then I would have to say that you should probably not have the ground all green, the earth the cround has many colors, like the mountains and the deserts... it looks to... sterio-earth-type, and maybe since it is a different planet, then maybe the coloring would be a little bit... different... like the clouds because of some atmospheric phenomanon were purple... I like purple..., and since the cities are so big they should show up more... but just slightly, and the dark half should be darker...

The stars are good. ^_^
Round out the planet a little, give it a bit more depth.
Also...with how the light from the sun is set around it, it looks the the sun is maily on the other side. But the shadows don't quite match up with that.
The smaller circle bits (because this is a scientific term!) could use a little more shading too. Just because they are small does not need they should be neglected the same attention you give the focus. *nods*

I'd also say...if you're trying to capture that sense of vastness, move the sun much farther away and decrease the glow. This will make the planet look more lonely, instead of with shiney friends.

Fwee! Danke much for the thoughts. I've actually been thinking about dragging this thing out of the dank archives of my computer and subjecting it to more torture, so your comment is much appreciated. Also: GOOD LORD, EMI-CHAN! Long time no see! O_o

Of course Kei-kichi! =^_^= Please forgive the many typos...>.> I have been on drugs, as you know, and didn't notice. lol

It HAS been a while...O.O Perhaps I will come into Salem for my birthday on the 25th, and you can join us for fun and frolic *nodnods*
